Winter Motorcycle Storage in WNY [2026 Guide + Prices]

Last updated: April 2026

WNY winter ends a motorcycle riding season around late October and doesn’t let you back on the road until April or later. Storage isn’t optional for most local riders, and it isn’t just about parking the bike somewhere. Salt, freezing temps, and humidity will eat a motorcycle that’s not prepped right. A battery left to its own devices for five months will be dead by spring.

This guide covers when to start the layup process, where to store across WNY, what size unit fits your bike, the full winterization checklist for our climate specifically, and the common mistakes that turn a stored bike into a spring repair bill. If you ride year-round through WNY winters with proper gear and studded tires, this isn’t your guide. For everyone else, here’s the practical version.

When WNY Motorcycle Storage Season Starts and Ends

WNY motorcycle storage season typically runs from late October through April. The first hard freeze in Buffalo and Niagara Falls usually hits between late October and mid-November, and road salt starts going down around the same time. Storage units at Jeff’s Attic across three WNY locations (Grand Island, Niagara Falls, Wheatfield) start at $85 per month for a 5×10 unit that fits most motorcycles, with 24/7 access and a 10% military discount that stacks on top of any current promotion.

The exact “store it now” date depends on the year and your tolerance. Some riders pack it up at the first weekend of consistently below-50 mornings. Others push into November until salt trucks start running. Once salt is on the roads, every commute is degrading the bike. Get it in storage before then. (For winter sports vehicles going the opposite direction at the same time, see our guide to snowmobile storage in WNY.)

Where to Store a Motorcycle in WNY for Winter

Indoor self-storage is the right answer for almost every WNY rider. Outdoor parking exposes the bike to snow load, freezing rain, and salt spray from passing trucks if the lot is roadside. Driveway storage at home works only if you have garage space, which most apartment dwellers and many homeowners don’t.

Jeff’s Attic operates three WNY locations that all offer indoor storage suitable for motorcycles:

Grand Island (1763 Baseline Road)

Central WNY location between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Lowest starting price in the system at $75 for the smallest unit, $85 for the 5×10 that fits a single motorcycle. I-190 Exit 18A from Buffalo. Good pick if you live in Tonawanda, Kenmore, or anywhere on the Buffalo side.

Niagara Falls (9805 Porter Road)

Closest to NFARS, the airport, and the northern Niagara County riders. 5×10 units start at $85. Good pick if you’re in Niagara Falls, Lewiston, or the Wheatfield/Sanborn corridor.

Wheatfield (6870 Plaza Drive)

On Plaza Drive just off Niagara Falls Boulevard. Best for Lockport, North Tonawanda, and east Niagara County riders. Wheatfield’s mix runs to larger units, so for a single bike, Grand Island or Niagara Falls usually beats it on price.

All three locations have 24/7 access, no appointments, and 11 unit sizes from 5×5 up to 20×30. For a single motorcycle, you’re looking at a 5×10 or 10×10.

Unit Size for Motorcycle Winter Storage

Most motorcycles fit in a 5×10 unit. The bigger 10×10 makes sense if you’re storing a touring bike, a bagger, two motorcycles, or planning to keep gear and a battery tender setup in the unit with the bike.

Bike TypeRecommended UnitStarting PriceNotes
Sport bike, naked, standard5×10$85/moPlenty of room for one bike plus a few accessories
Cruiser (mid-size)5×10$85/moMost cruisers fit fine; check width with mirrors
Touring bike, full bagger10×10$130/moHard cases and fairings take up more space
Two motorcycles10×10$130/moTight but workable for two smaller bikes
Bike + gear + tender setup10×10$130/moRoom for the bike plus storage of riding gear

Measure your motorcycle (length plus mirrors width) before reserving. Industry sources confirm that almost all motorcycles are longer than 5 feet, which is why the 5×5 isn’t suitable. The 5×10 gives ~50 square feet, enough for most bikes plus a battery tender and a small gear bin.

A few requirements to know up front: the motorcycle has to be in working condition, registered, and insured to be stored at any self-storage facility. It can’t be towed in or stored on blocks. You drive it in.

How to Winterize a Motorcycle for WNY Climate

Most generic winterization guides are written for a 60-day store. WNY layups run 4 to 5 months, and the salt corrosion problem here is worse than most US regions. Here’s the prep checklist that matches our climate.

1. Wash thoroughly to remove road salt

This is the most important step in WNY and the one most generic guides underweight. Salt residue accelerates corrosion on chrome, exposed metal, and aluminum. Use a motorcycle-specific cleaner (not car cleaner, which can damage paint), focus on the underside, and dry completely before storage. Apply wax to painted surfaces and a corrosion inhibitor or silicone spray to exposed metals.

2. Change the oil and filter

Old oil contains contaminants that become acidic over months of sitting. Fresh oil before storage prevents corrosion of internal engine components. Industry sources recommend this universally for storage longer than 30 days.

3. Top off or change other fluids

Brake fluid, clutch fluid, and coolant. DOT4 brake fluid absorbs water and should be changed every two years regardless. Coolant prevents the cooling system from freezing in unheated storage.

4. Fill the tank and add fuel stabilizer

Do not drain the tank. A full tank of stabilized fuel prevents condensation and corrosion of the fuel tank’s interior. Run the engine for 5 to 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to circulate it through the entire fuel system, including injectors or carburetor jets.

5. Inflate tires to upper PSI

Tires lose pressure during cold storage and develop flat spots from sitting. Inflate to the upper end of the recommended range. If you have a rear stand or paddock stand, use it to take weight off the tires entirely.

6. Lubricate the chain and pivots

Clean and lube the chain. Add lubrication to throttle cables, clutch cable, and pivot points to prevent seizure.

7. Battery prep

See the next section for lithium vs lead-acid handling.

8. Cover with a breathable motorcycle cover

A synthetic, breathable cover, not a tarp. Tarps trap moisture and grow mold underneath. Indoor storage means a light dust cover is fine; outdoor or unheated storage requires a heavier weatherproof but vented option.

The full process takes 2 to 3 hours if you’re doing it yourself. Buffalo-area Harley dealers and most independent shops offer winterization services for $150 to $300 if you’d rather hand it off.

Battery Handling: Lithium vs Lead-Acid

Most generic storage guides treat all motorcycle batteries the same. They aren’t. The right approach depends on what’s in your bike.

Lead-acid batteries (older bikes, most cruisers, many touring bikes)

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge over time, faster in cold temperatures. Five months of WNY winter without intervention drops most lead-acid batteries below the point where they’ll start the bike, and repeated deep discharges shorten battery lifespan by up to 40%.

The fix: connect a battery tender (also called a maintenance charger or trickle charger) for the entire winter. The tender adds charge when needed and shuts off when full, so it won’t overcharge. You can leave it connected to the battery in the bike, or remove the battery and tender it on a shelf indoors.

If you remove the battery, do not store it on a concrete floor. Cold transfers from the concrete and can crack the case. Put it on a wood shelf or workbench.

Lithium-ion batteries (newer sport bikes, BMW, KTM, some Harleys)

Lithium batteries have a much lower self-discharge rate and are tolerant of months of disconnected storage. The recommended approach is to disconnect the negative terminal and let it sit. A tender isn’t required, though one specifically labeled as lithium-compatible (most modern tenders are) won’t hurt.

Do not use a tender designed only for lead-acid batteries on a lithium battery. Lead-acid tenders use a charging profile that can damage lithium cells over time. Check your tender’s specs before connecting.

Common WNY Motorcycle Storage Mistakes

A few things that go wrong every spring in WNY motorcycle communities:

  1. Starting the bike monthly without riding it. This is bad advice. A short idle in the garage doesn’t bring the bike up to operating temperature, which means moisture condenses in the engine, exhaust, and battery. The fix: either ride it for 30+ minutes (often impractical in winter) or leave it alone and rely on the storage prep.
  2. Skipping the salt wash. Salt residue from late-season rides eats chrome and aluminum over months of storage. By April, you’ll see corrosion that wasn’t there in October.
  3. Tarp instead of breathable cover. Tarps trap condensation. By March, mold and corrosion have set in under the cover. A $40 breathable cover saves hundreds in spring repair.
  4. Battery left connected without a tender. Standard for lead-acid batteries to be dead by January with no maintenance. Replacement is $80 to $200, plus the inconvenience of a non-starting bike when riding season opens.
  5. Storing on the side stand for 5 months. Long-term side-stand storage leans the bike on one tire, encouraging flat-spotting and uneven fork seal pressure. A center stand or rear paddock stand fixes both.
  6. Filling tires in the storage unit only. Tires lose pressure as temperatures drop. Check pressure mid-winter, especially if your unit isn’t climate-controlled.
  7. Forgetting where the keys are. Sounds dumb until you’re standing at the unit in April with no key. Tape a copy somewhere obvious in the unit, or leave one at home.

How to Reserve a Motorcycle Storage Unit

Reserving online takes about five minutes. Your size, price, and current promotion are held for 30 days with no upfront payment.

  1. Pick the location closest to you. Grand Island, Niagara Falls, or Wheatfield. Use the breakdown above.
  2. Pick your size. 5×10 for most single-bike storage, 10×10 if you have a touring bike, two bikes, or want gear storage.
  3. Reserve online. Size, price, and any active promo are held for 30 days, no payment due until move-in.
  4. Bring military ID at move-in if applicable. Active duty, reservists, retirees, and veterans get a 10% military discount stacked on top of any current promotion. CAC, Reserve ID, retiree ID, VA ID, or DD-214 all work.
  5. Drop off on your schedule. All three WNY locations have 24/7 access. No appointment needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I put my motorcycle in storage in WNY?

Most WNY motorcycle owners store between late October and mid-November, before the first hard freeze and before road salt starts going down regularly. The exact date depends on the year and your tolerance for cold weather riding, but once salt is on the roads, every ride is corroding the bike. Earlier is safer.

How much does motorcycle storage cost in WNY for the winter?

At Jeff’s Attic, a 5×10 unit suitable for most motorcycles starts at $85 per month at the Grand Island and Niagara Falls locations. A 10×10 unit, suitable for touring bikes or two motorcycles, starts at $130 per month at Grand Island. Active duty, reservists, retirees, and veterans get a 10% discount stacked on top of any current promotion.

Can I leave my battery in the motorcycle during winter storage?

Yes for both lithium-ion (disconnect negative terminal, leave it) and lead-acid (connect a battery tender for the full winter). What you cannot do is leave a lead-acid battery connected without a tender for 4-5 months. It will be dead and possibly damaged by spring.

Do I need to drain the gas tank for winter storage?

No. Industry-standard advice is to fill the tank completely and add a fuel stabilizer, not drain it. A full tank prevents condensation and rust inside the tank. Run the engine for 5-10 minutes after adding stabilizer to circulate it through the fuel system.

Winter Motorcycle Storage in WNY: The Bottom Line

Get the bike prepped before the first hard freeze, pick a 5×10 or 10×10 unit at the closest of three Jeff’s Attic WNY locations, set up the battery handling correctly for whatever battery type you have, and use a breathable cover not a tarp. The 30-day reservation hold lets you lock in a unit before the cold sets in.
